GCPC EPISODE 452

Listener FeedBack:{YES}
From Adam McCreadie to our UK viewers and listeners:

The summer of 2016 promises to be an exciting time for Geocachers. On July 30th the first Mega of the season, Piratemania, is being held near Shrewsbury. The following day in Ashridge (near Tring), Geolympix 2016 takes place before a week of events running up to the 9th Annual UK Mega Event which is being held in Llangollen, North Wales on the 6th August 2016. In addition to 3 Megas and at least 10 events there is the exciting addition of the GPS Maze exhibition being held in Llangollen which is the first time in the UK and the first time in English outside North America!
Why not come along for the opportunity to experience 3 distinctly different Mega events, the GPS Maze, 40 labcaches (across 3 Megas and the GPS Maze) and taste the broad range of geocaches that the UK has to offer all in one week!

The quiz was wonderful and well played by our hosts. Looks like the lady wins the prize though. It was glorious.

GCPC EPISODE 451
http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/high-tech-camping-gadgets/

Choose your favorites here or bring your own ideas. It’s all good.

HHH:
Powertraveller Powermonkey Extreme. A very slim, rugged, waterproof and portable solar charger that has a USB port and 9000mAh battery for when theclouds block the sun. [£120]
DW4:
Ivation 7 W Solar Charging Panel, 1.8L Hydration Backpack/Bladder Bag w/Flexible Drinking Pipe, 10,000 mAh Waterproof Power bank $89.99
TAZ:
The one thing I think of is Juice and more Juice – Hydration for me and Power for my equipment. It looks like the Ivation 7 W is a double whammy there. Any good alternatives (Preferably Priced less than Goal Zero) for those of us who love our Camelbaks? Suaoki Solar Panel $45.99 (on Sale – list $95.99) 16W 5V to USB
DW4:
Monoprice 15W, 5V Portable Solar Charger $39.95
FosPower PowerActive 10200 mAh Power Bank – 2.1A USB Output [Water/Shock/Dust Proof] $24.95 (on sale, list is $69.99)
RAVPower Portable Charger 3200mAh External Battery Pack Power Bank with Ultra bright flashlight $14.99 (on sale, list is $49.99)
Portable Charger RAVPower 3200mAh External Battery Charger with LED UV Flashlight (100lm) $14.99 (on sale, list is $29.99)
TAZ:
Head Lamp – Wide variety available in price, brightness and cost. But I’d recommend having one in your pack, even if you don’t plan on being out at night. I like to have one so it keeps my hands free.
Flash Light – It can be a 1000+ Lumen Cree LED powered beast to a cheap 80 Lumen LED, but make sure it’s one that’s going to last a couple hours, especially if you don’t carry a head lamp. You can get a good 1200 Lumen Cree XM-L for $15 with 18650 battery and charger Ultra Fire 1200. Note, that the batteries will drain over time, so you’ll want to charge them up before a good hike/night time cache find.
Life Straw – Light weight, water prufication (0.11lbs) $19.99
DW4:
I’d also recommend a dry bag or two in the pack – you don’t know when it might rain or you need to cross a stream and it’s nice to toss the electronics in there to be safe. They start at about $8 for cheap ones built for smartphones and there’s ones for tablets, or ones with floatation in case you drop it in the stream or pond.
SPOT Gen3 $169.95
4 x AAA Lithium/NiMH
Basic Service $14.99/month, $149.99/year
Enhanced Tracking $4.99 or $14.99/month, $49.99 or $149.99/year
inReach Explorer $379.95/inReach SE $299.95
Internal rechargeable battery
Pairs via Bluetooth with Apple iOS, Android, or Kindle Fire with bluetooth
Initial account activation fee of $19.95.
Move down a plan at any time for $24.95.
Service ranges from $11.95 to $99.95/month
SPOT Global Phone $549.95
Interchangeable rechargeable battery
Service $39.99 to $149.99/month
HHH:
JakPak Waterproof Jacket, Sleeping Bag & Tent. You can wear it as a jacket and instantly unzip some material to make it into a sleeping bag. It then can deploy a tent over your head for a warm, dry and comfortable sleep. [$199.99]
DW4:
And we should mention BioLite for the campers.
CampStove $129.95
BaseCamp $299.95
NanoGrid $99.95
“The NanoGrid is a compact, powerful system of rechargeable lighting and power storage. An advanced energy hub, the PowerLight stores shareable energy in the palm of your hand while the daisy-chain SiteLights provide a home-like network of overhead lighting.”
SolarPanel 5 $59.95
“The SolarPanel 5 features the same optimizing function and design of the SolarPanel 5+ but removes the battery to bring you an ultra-minimal panel with one of the best dollars-per-watt on the market. Power phones, tablets, and BioLite gear in real-time with this lightweight and slim 5-Watt monocrystalline power supply or pair with an external powerbank for an easy energy storage solution.”
There’s also an interesting device one of the GeoGearHeads shared;
goTenna
2 pack $199
4 pack $389
HHH:
Sony Digital Recording Binoculars. 25x binocular magnification with image stabilization during video recording in full HD and 3D modes. [$1999.99]

coverart

May 05, 2016

In tonight’s episode of the Geocaching Podcast:
We try to not be too sarcastic with our podcast… well mostly anyways. Geocaching turns sweet 16 and all that really comes to mind is well nothing really. So we are trying to come up with the positive reasons people should continue to geocache even though nothing of any import has come out of geocaching hq in years.

Be sure to check it out! Please share with other geocachers.

We meet on Wednesday nights at 9:30PM ET at http://www.geocachingpodcast.com/live so you can see us record the show live and join in the chat room. See you there!

The Video Version of our Podcast

GCPC EPISODE 450 – Geocaching Turns 16 – Big Deal or Big Whoop?
Geocaching Turns 16 – Big news or Big Deal – is this all that there is?
Answer the ultimate question to counter or enhance our first bullet point. As in depth as possible → What makes geocaching great?
Please give as many reasons why geocaching is great for you?

HHH:
The travel to new places – events and adventures
My geocaching ebbs and flows. The point is I re-realize why I love geocaching that rekindles the need to go out and geocache again
The geocaching community is nothing like any other world wide social gathering of people like no other I know. Extended family.

SB:
People i’ve met through the past 8 years
Places i’ve gone and seen, even in my own neighborhood
Seeing other countries, many states
Love talking to people who listen to the show at events, Mega’s, etc.

TAZ:
Anything exciting happening for the Sweet 16???
Exploring places that I’d not normally come across, even in my own neck of the woods.
The jubilation of after 30mins of searching, and getting ready to call it quits and then your eyes/hands/feet/walking stick hits the cache.
