Updated in the iOS App Store yesterday was the free Geocaching Intro app from Groundspeak. The app is not available to new users but the update is available to existing users.

CacheSense for Android version 2.1

Version 2.1 of CacheSense for Androiddropped in Google Play. According to the notes in the Marketplace this version includes:

New database structure keeps all of your personal data (profile, field notes, waypoints, images, trackables) in a separate profile database.
New features for copying and saving caches among multiple databases
Many bug fixes, workflow improvements and other enhancements.

A free 30-day Trial version is also available.

Cinco de Mayo saw another version of the GCTools app drop from the iOS App Store. Version 2.1.1 includes bug fixes and they ask you delete and redownload the app if you experience crashes. This is a free app for limited functionality with in app purchases to enable the extra features.

Awaiting me this morning was an update to the Munzee app for Android. Version 0.80 was release to the Android Marketplace with several updates (details are available through the release notes). The app is available for free through Google Play.

CacheSense for Android version 2.0.01

Having apparently missed the major version 2 upgrade to CacheSense for Android, I did have version 2.0.01 waiting for me this morning. According to the notes in the Marketplace this version just has minor bug fixes. The full version is available in Google Play and there is still a free 30-day Trial version.

Munzee version 0.95 for iOS

On the heals of server upgrades over at Munzee comes a new version for iOS users. The most visible change in this version are the new pins (created by user s0l). They've also added a "Friends List" to the Rankings screen and support for "Virtual Munzees." Of course they've also added some bug fixes to this mix. The app is still free from the App Store.

iGCT version 2.0 for iOS

The free iGCT (Geocaching Toolkit) version 2.0 dropped from the iOS App Store this afternoon. Details on this update are pretty light as the official website still shows version 1.4 at this posting, but the iOS update notes includes a couple of bug fixes and a link to purchase the iGCT Pro app.

This morning I was greeted by another update to NeonGeo right on the heals of the last. The app is now at version 1.155 and their change log shows only "Various small fixes (Mainly Live Map related)." It is available in the Play Store for $4.26USD for new users.

Just before heading to bed last night I found an update to the Munzee app for iOS users. This version seems to mostly address changes to the service announced this weekend but does still tackle a few bugs. The app is still free from the App Store.

Checking on available updates this morning I was greeted by one for Geo Bucket. Version 2.2 makes several improvements and is still free (ad supported) for both iPhone and iPad users in the iOS App Store.

Checking the app store this evening I found an update to Geo Bucket waiting to be downloaded. Hopefully this release will resolve most of the crash issues we ran into with the version 2.0 release.

c:geo received an update recently. The c:geo - opensource app is free in the Android Marketplace. The full changelog hasn't been posted to their website, but according to the list submitted to the market, this version includes:

GeoBucket version 2.0 for iOS

We've been expecting this update since Groundspeak added it to the list of LIVE API apps in their Valentine's Day Geocaching.com Update. GeoBucket went 2.0 today as it dropped from the iOS App store with support for Geocaching.com's Live API. The free app (with advertisements which can be removed through a $3.99US in app purchase) provides a complete caching tool for both the iPhone and iPad sized devices.

Geocaching version 4.6.0 for iOS

iOS Users of Groundspeak's Geocaching app will find a new version waiting for them today. Version 4.6.0 adds support for the User's Ingore List when searching from the app, a fix for the bug for app slow downs, and some minor bug fixes. This is a free update for existing owners through the App Store, and still $9.99US for new purchases.

Munzee version 0.73 for Android

The folks from Munzee announced last night that version 0.73 was release to the Android Marketplace with bug fixes for Motorola users and disabling of mock GPS locations. Details are available through the release notes and the app is available for free in the Android Marketplace.

CacheSense for Android version 1.1.06

This morning I found another update to CacheSense for Android. According to the notes in the Marketplace version 1.1.06 includes:

Fixed bug in map view which caused the live cache search to freeze.
New Geocaching Live authorization process, now handled entirely within the app and no longer relies on the CacheSense server.
Various bug fixes.

The full version is available in the Android Marketplace for $5.00US through the end of the month and there is still a free 30-day Trial version.

According to the change logs version 1.149 includes the "Fix Google Navigation links" and "Geocache proximity alarm" which were mentioned as being "under progress for an upcoming release" previously. It's been a long time since the last update to the iGeoCacher app for iOS. This early utility for Geocachers on the iPhone received a few minor updates in version 2.7, but also removed support for the Ayefon server based file transfers. The developer is also running a sale on the app through the end of the year. It is $4.99USD through the iOS App Store, or as always a free update to existing users.

Aside from iOS 5 improvements, this version features OKAPI interface support for the opencaching.pl, .us, .org, and .uk sites. Also released from the iOS App Store Friday night was the latest version of the Geocaching app. Version 4.5.5 adds support for visiting trackable in caches, shows favorite points, the option to display more than 5 cache logs, and additional waypoints from the geocache details. Also fixed in this version are photos in the cache gallery, field note timestamp issues, Opencyclemaps, and zoom levels. Complete release notes are available in the Geocaching.com Forums.

Challenges version 1.0

Ahead of today's Geocaching.com site update has been the release of the "Challenges" App for iOS. The app allow direct access to the new Challenge cache (connects to the database, not the web site) for the ability to search for, accept, and complete the new caches. This is a free app, available and functional now.

This edition fixes bugs in the previous version, particularly a date/time bug on logs, advanced search returning the wrong cache size, and User Notes display. iPhone Munzee users have a treat for their weekend hunting. This is the version which includes the much discussed and anticipated journal feature. Now iOS users can leave notes and star ratings for the Munzees they find. More important is the ability to note that a Munzee was not found. Of course there are more features and some bugs addressed as well added to this young app. The app (and membership) are still free. The app is available from the iOS App Store.

Also dropping today from the iOS App Store is version 1.2 of Garmin's OpenCaching app. This latest edition add support for virtual caches, additional languages, and fixes some bugs. The app is still free in the iOS App Store.

Geocaching Buddy version 6.00

Checking software updates this morning I found a new version of BtStSoft's Geocaching Buddy iOS app (Geocaching Buddy is also available for Android.). Version 6.00 has a list of many new and improved features, and the developer notes that the app "is prepared to use the Groundspeak Live API but release is done on a per developer basis and has not started yet." The app is still $9.99 for new users (available in the iOS App Store), and free for upgrading users.

Now you can quickly perform a search for multiple cache types while omitting some types, look for difficulty and terrain ranges, search by size, and more. GeoWoodstock IX Podcast Studio Ustream Update 2

We are still working to get power to the Podcast Studio at GeoWoodstock IX and the internet connection is not yet ready. Unfortunately we will not be able to stream most of the sessions through Ustream. We still hold out hope that Geocaching World might be able to get a stream out so watch @HeadHardHat for updates.

As of 9:00PM last night the folks over at SkyStreak were still working to get us the internet connection for our streaming from the GeoWoodstock IX Podcast Studio. While they haven't given up on getting us a connection, it is likely that we will not have the connection to broadcast through Ustream. We should still be able to get updates out via Twitter as to the status of the connection so you'll want to want my Twitter feed -- @DarrylW4 -- as we get closer to the event. We're looking forward to meeting so many of you there and still hope we can include those who can't make it to GoWoodstock IX through the Ustream.

GeoWoodstock IX Live Stream Update

We're only a few days from Geowoodstock IX and hope to meet many of you at our sessions on the Podcast Studio. Many more won't be able to join us in person and have been asking for live streams from the sessions. Barring any unforeseen issues onsite we will be streaming live video through Ustream for each of the sessions. Garmin announce Friday the launch of apps for both Android and iOS for users of their OpenCaching.com site. The complete release is available on their site, but the short of it is that Android and iOS users can download and use the apps for free. The app supports finding, hiding, and learning about geocaching through the OpenCaching.com. Android users can download the app from the Android Marketplace, and iPhone users can get the app from the iOS App Store.

January 2011 iOS App Updates

I'm catching up with several of the iOS app updates which dropped during the first part of this month in one post:

Groundspeak's Geocaching App for iOS was updated on the seventh. Version 4.2.2 addressed several issues in the app but doesn't add anything new. Sadly I've not been able to find release notes on the Geocaching forums for more information than was provided in the update screen.

PiGo was updated to version 1.2.1 on the eleventh. This version simply contained a work-around for the web site login issue.

The new "CacheMe" app also saw an update on the eleventh. This is the first time I've written about this new app which connects with Garmin's OpenCaching.com site.

The iOS app simply titled "Caching" also has received an update to version 2 on the seventeenth. It now features file transfers within iTunes, Geocaching.com compatible field notes, information about travel bugs within a cache, iPhone 4 support, and more.

MotionX GPS version 15 also dropped. I've been ignoring many of the subtle updates this app has received, but this is a major release with several new features. The full version is still $2.99 for new users, and the lite version is still free to everyone.

Garmin’s Open Caching Goes Beta

The much discussed, rumored, and debated Opencaching.com opened its doors in beta today. Garmin touts this as "...completely free online community for creating, sharing and finding geocaches around the world." The difference they're pushing is called "The Awesome Factor" which allows the user to rank the cache. This with the size, terrain, and difficulty ratings are tied together in a single bulls-eye illustration giving the cacher a simple overview of the cache. Their venture into the listing service arena looks promising but the buzz on Twitter affirmed the beta nature of the release with complaints about several features not functioning. Hopefully these are quickly resolved and we'll be able to get a good feeling of this new service.

Wherigo On The iPhone…But Not Really

Last night I received some good news for iPhone Geocachers. Thanks to the Minnesota based Pi-Soft Consulting, LLC's release of their WherPiGo App (iTunes link) there's now an option to round-out an iOS device for Geocaching. WherPiGo is an independent player for Groundspeak's Wherigo platform cartridges. This joins the celebrated release of WhereYouGo (Android Marketplace link) for the Android platform bringing support to more than the Pocket PC, Colorado, and Oregon officially supported by Wherigo. WherPiGo is currently a free app requiring iOS 4 on either an iPhone or iPod Touch (though I suspect a GPS might be required as well). With the addition of this app iPhone Geocachers can now hunt all types of Geocaching.com caches with only the one device.

I downloaded and tried out this first version of WherPiGo. To test it out I downloaded a few cartridges and ran the "Wherigo Player Tutorial" as that's a play anywhere cartridge I've played on all three of the officially supported platforms. Downloading cartridges into the app can be done one of two ways. The first would be to copy the cartridge into the iOS device through iTunes (select the device and choose the "Apps" option across the top, then scroll down to "File Sharing" and select "Wherigo." Click the "Add..." button and find the cartridge). The more obvious way has you browse through Wherigo.com and download the cartridges directly. My issue with the second method has been that it always goes to the landing page at Wherigo.com after downloading a cartridge or opening for the first time. If you were searching that will be lost as you re-enter. There isn't yet a way to go to Geocaching.com for the direct link to the cartridge from the cache page making it a little more challenging to locate a specific cartridge. In many situations you'll likely find it best to download and load the cartridges from the computer. The Developer suggests that you download the PPC version of the cartridges but the Oregon or Colorado versions should also work (I'm hoping that this player supports the audio but haven't had a cartridge with recorded audio to try yet). Once you have the cartridges loaded into the app it's simply a matter of tapping one to bring up the splash page, then tapping "Play" to start. Now you're in business.

From here everything worked well with the test cartridge. This test was the most stable play I've had against the Digiwalker, Colorado, or Oregon in any version of the app. This was only the tutorial cartridge though and I haven't been able test and of the more troublesome cartridges we've done to find caches. The iPhone 4's screen provided the most stunning version of this cartridge I've experienced and it responded more quickly and accurately than any other device I've used. The input was easier than the Pocket PC or Oregon player, and once completed I was able to copy the confirmation code to paste into the Wherigo site to unlock the cartridge. So far WherPiGo has been a great way to access the Wherigo world and I'll look forward to spending more time there.

I've long contended that Wherigo has been stuck due to the lack of support for more players. Now that we have capable options for two of the most popular smartphone options we'll soon get the answer. This, and the option for the Android, still are independent productions without official support of Grounspeak and I'd still prefer to have that support whether blessing these third party contributions or releasing their own official app (wouldn't it be nice to have the option built-in to the Geocaching App?). We still have problems with a lack of an easy way to build the cartridge, but I suspect even that will be changing soon as well. Till then we'll hope that the broader base of Wherigo players will reinvigorate the Wherigo Community to produce more exciting caches for us to try. Even if it's not official, we have Wherigo on the iPhone and I expect interest with the increased number of potential users will expand.

Checking my iPhone for updates I discovered that MotionX GPS LIte have been updated to version 12.5. The most notable change seems to been improved distance measurements.

Geocaching iOS App version 4.1

It was only yesterday when Groundspeak announced they submitted version 4.1 of their Geocaching App to Apple's App Store. Today that update is available for download and promises fixes for a few issues bothering its users. The release notes for this version are available on Groundspeak's Get Satisfaction page.

Geocaching iOS App version 4.0.1

Groundspeak's update to their Geocaching iOS App hit the App Store today. Version 4.0.1 includes a number of bug fixes and enhancements. More information is available in their release notes. Unfortunately there are some known issues which still remain in this version. Some of those include issues with large pocket queries and additional waypoints which don't appear on the map. I'm looking forward to getting this version onto my iPhone 3G S and tested with iOS 4.

iGeoCacher 2.5

It's been some time since we've seen an update to iGeoCacher, but today version 2.5 dropped in the App Store. This version takes advantage of new functionality in iOS 4 allowing GPX and LOC files to be opened directly from the mail app.

Geocaching Buddy version 4.3

Today's app updates from the App Store included a new version of Geocaching Buddy. Release notes aren't posted yet, but the notes in the app store indicate fixes for iOS 4 and the addition of a quick search bar.

Geosphere Version 2.3 Released

Almost two weeks after the release of 2.2.3 another update of Geocaching with Geosphere has popped up in the App Store. Version 2.3 include more bug fixes and enhancements most targeted for iOS4 devices, but still works with OS 3.1. One of the most interesting enhancements is the ability to import attachments directly from Apple's Mail app on iOS4 devices. More information is available in the release notes for version 2.3.

Many iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad users will be thrilled to discover the new version of the Geocaching App from Groundspeak is now available for download in the App Store. This new version provides a number of great updates including iOS 4 compatibility. Some of the more notable ones include the return of Google Maps (now an option), photo uploads with logs, dropping of trackables, and notes for caches. It's available for download now and you can find it through iTunes or the App Store on your iOS device.

Drie will be happy to learn that the Geocaching Buddy app has been updated overnight. GB has been her choice for working puzzle caches for the last couple years and her database is loaded up with all the caches se's solved This version introduces support for iOS 4 and better support for pasting.

MotionX GPS Lite version 12.1

I misses it yesterday but MotionX's free GPS app for iOS was updated Thursday in the App Store. This can be a great tool for those GPSR users looking for that functionality from their iPhone or iPod Touch with a GPS dock (i.e. Dual XGPS300).

Geosphere Version 2.2.3 Released

Checking for updates on my iPhone this evening I found that another update to Geocaching with Geosphere has been released. This version addresses the issues with uploading field notes. I'll be anxious to give it a try since that's been a major reason I've gone back to the Geocaching app for my recent outings.

Available this morning through the App Store is the Geocaching with Geosphere 2.2.1 update. According to the release notes (available here) this release includes one new feature and four bug fixes.

Appearing in my iTunes App Store updates this morning was "Geocaching with Geosphere" version 2.2. This updates includes many new features and bug fixes (release notes available here). Some of the more notable ones include rotating maps for devices with the electronic compass, cache attribute support, new find counter, and customizable field note templates. This is a free upgrade for existing users and $7.99 US for new users.

Checking my iPhone app updates this morning I found a new version of Geocaching with Geosphere now available in the iTunes App Store. This version improves support fo external GPSRs. I'm looking forward to the "Significant upgrade coming soon...." Full release notes on version 2.1.2 are available from the Geosphere Support Forums.

Geocaching iPhone App version 3.1

Released in the iTunes store this morning is the latest version of Groundspeak's Geocaching iPhone App. Version 3.1 really focuses on reducing headaches during the high-traffic periods (like the last several Sundays). This part of the larger development effort for all of Geocaching.com to improve performance as the activity grows and traffic increases. It's available now through the App Store as a free upgrade to existing users.

MotionX just seems to rank out these updates. Tonight's take them to version 9.4 with bug fixes and optimizations. I haven't even tried version 9 yet.

I stopped posting updates a while back about updates to MotionX GPS Lite simply because they were happening so frequently. They're still rolling them out though and just released today is version 9.3. I've not had the chance to open it up though since version 9 was released so I'm looking forward to giving it a try.

Checking for updates this morning I found one from BtStSoft for their Geocaching Buddy. This doesn't look to offer much that I'm interested aside from the preloading of images.
